A celebration of commercial property excellence also turned out to be a massive R1 million boost for charity and humanitarian causes, thanks to the community-mindedness of Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) and Growthpoint Properties.
Growthpoint's industrial property division donated R1 million to five charities in consultation with its Operation Millionaire broker competition winner for 2015, JLL.
Engelbert Binedell, Growthpoint's Industrial Division Director, commented: "It is a pleasure to do business with an honourable company like JLL. While property owners and brokers often find themselves on opposite sides of the negotiation table, when we set our sights on the same end-goal, we achieve great things. Real estate advisors, such as JLL, are often regarded as detrimental to a real estate negotiation. Growthpoint's relationship with JLL has however always been positive. This initiative is testament to how likeminded corporates can have a positive impact in society.”
With this in mind, it is no surprise the R1 million donation will have huge positive impacts.
It will help refurbish an orphanage, create new opportunities for kids with special needs, put a smile on more children's faces, make dreams come true for children fighting life-threatening illnesses and develop skills and knowledge for people with physical disabilities.
"JLL is proud to be part of supporting worthy causes through its Corporate Solutions division, which acts on behalf of large national and international businesses in their dealings with landlords in the local real estate landscape” says Simon Wade, Head of Corporate Solutions for JLL South Africa.
Growthpoint tapped into the resources of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team to identify opportunities for meaningful community engagements and social investment with the R1 million donation.
Shawn Theunissen, Head of CSR at Growthpoint Properties, says: "We're humbled and happy for this opportunity created by JLL and Growthpoint to empower communities and help to create better and brighter futures for recipients. This donation supports building social infrastructure, improving lives and boosting education to create places and spaces for people to thrive.”
As part of the donation initiatives, Growthpoint will sponsor two property upgrade projects for the donation recipients.
It is constructing a tailor-made therapy pool for special needs school, Unity College, which is expected to cost around R200,000.
Supporting quality childcare for abandoned children, it is also undertaking refurbishments around the orphanage property of The Love of Christ Ministry (TLC), estimated at R80,000.
Operation Smile South Africa has received R220,000 towards its work providing free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children, as well as life support education and training.
Giving hope to children fighting life-threatening illnesses through the fulfilment of their dreams, Reach For A Dream Foundation has received R100,000 to continue its valuable work and help make more dreams come true across South Africa.
The Association for the Physically Disabled – Greater Johannesburg was the recipient of R220,000, which will go towards its internship and learnership programmes.
The donations were handed over at a special breakfast celebration attended by members of Growthpoint's industrial team, its CSR team as well as representatives of JLL, and the beneficiaries.
